About the Artist

Rebecca West-Beale is a passionate and innovative artist, based in the UK, with a distinctive approach to drawing. Married and a mother of two, Rebecca combines her artistic pursuits with a busy family environment. Rebecca has enjoyed drawing throughout her life. As a child it gave her solace and escapism. She has enjoyed many creative outlets since then.

She has come back to drawing more and more over the last couple of years. This closes a circle - during her studies it was drawing she loved the most and remembers being fascinated in drawing the human skeleton. Rebecca finds life drawing and study of the figure very interesting - how people move, hold themselves, how bodies twist and turn, expressing emotions and holding a map of life’s journey. Her work shows a journey with line telling of moments and movements of the form, implying a human progression with experiences and growth.

Her output has been quite diverse, ranging from abstract painting and nature inspired illustrative picture making to figurative and portrait studies in pencil, paint and charcoal. She has been absorbed with faces, figures, structure and line for some time. Rebecca often leaves the draft lines in to show the journey of a piece, how its story has evolved and to show her connection with the work.

Sometimes she draws with her dominant and non-dominant hand on the same work - her dominant hand for control and precision, while the non-dominant hand lends looseness of line, and by allowing these lines to flow freely and accepting lines that may seem ‘wrong’ they may become an integral part of the expressive whole. Rebecca enjoys working with pencil, charcoal and paint on wood panels. Embracing the texture and grain of the wood's surface leads to beautiful mark outcomes in the drawing.

Rebecca has recently achieved Highly Commended in the British Art Prize 2023 and was also chosen to exhibit at the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Exhibition 2021. She had her work displayed in galleries around the country and in the Paris College of Art.

Rebecca continuously develops her portfolio and if you would like to purchase or commission her work please make contact.
